Who Can Get a Tattoo in Texas?
How old do I have to be to get a tattoo in Texas?
Legally in Texas, you have to be 18 years or older to get a tattoo. Texas is a no-consent state, so even if you have a guardian or parent with you, we still can't tattoo you unless you are at least 18 and have proper ID. The only exception to this rule is if you are under the age of 18 and already have a tattoo, then your parent or legal guardian can consent to have that existing tattoo covered up -- if they determine that it is in your best interest. In which case, the tattoo must contain either 1.) offensive or obscene language or symbols, 2.) illegal drug related names, images, or symbols, 3.) gang-related signs, symbols, or words, or 4.) other words, symbols, or markings that the parent, guardian, or court deems in the minor's best interest to cover up. The parent or guardian must then sign an affidavit, present ID, address and contact information, and be present during the entire tattoo cover-up procedure.
